Varuna Aqua Products (P) Ltd as it presently exists was promoted by H.H. Prince AdithyaVarma, of the Royal family of Travancore in 2003. During the inception stage this organisation was named as Godavari Aqua Products with its base at Plot No:43 with 25 cents of land from KINFRA International Infrastrucutre Development Corporation- a statutory body of Government of Kerala (KIIDC).

The land has been procured for a 90 year lease from KIIDC and is bordered by Plot # 42 on the north, KINFRA Road on the east, Plot #44 on the south, and Plot 45a and 42b towards the west of the land leased by the organisation. (Presently Plot # 44 has been procured by M/s. VAPL (25 cents) for expansion project.

The entity was registered under the Companies Act 1956 on 28th day of September, 2006 with Prince AdithyaVarma and Mr.Pradeep Kumar Nair as the original subscribers to the shares of this company.

Dr. Francis Cletus had subsequently purchased the company from the original Promoters in September 2006. However, the developmental phase of the project got delayed due to other priorities in Dr. Francis Cletus's business operations.

The first phase of development was initiated in 2008-09 by increasing the capacity and market for the company's products. This phase has gone through a successful implementation. The major achievement of this increase is that the territorial rights for the McDowell brand which is Tamil Nadu is yet to be explored. The market increase planned for the future may be derived from the following avenues.

Strategic Growth Plan

1. Purified Water market in the territory of Tamil Nadu which is gathering acceleration in the second half of the year 2010-11.
2. Extending distributors network to double the retail outlet coverage in the existing utilised territory.
3. The widening of the product depth by the introduction of Soda under the brand of MCDowell's with access to the same territories.

Social benefits in the expansion

1. a. The savings in water consumption by 40% of the Purified water production which becomes the raw material for the Soda processing
2. b. The reduction in gradual erosion of the economy of Kerala due to consumption of products produced from other states.

Future Plans
VAPL is launching s massive expansion plan to provide drinking water by utilising full capacity of its allocate territory. Furthermore, it is now enlarging its product depth by including Soda as additional item in its product mix. The machinery and land required for the launch of this project has already been initiated. The machinery is getting assembled in Chennai and land area of 25 cents has already been procured. The building plans have been finalised and awaiting the go-ahead for construction from the Top Management.

Further Scope
In addition to the existing development plans VAPL has got the scope of enlarging its product line into Soft drinks. We estimate the scope of sales to reach 280%-300% from the existing share within the next 4-5 years from its estimates sales of 2011-12. Having successfully established a strong base of distribution network, VAPL is convinced that it shall achieve this targeted growth quite easily.

Conservatism
The conservative approach of VAPL in its growth pattern since inception holds strong as it has strengthened its hold in the present territory with strong relationships built with distributers holding a wide span of reach into the consumer market for drinking water.

Productivity through time and motion study and implementation
The area for convenient and efficient working has been identified through scientific time and motion study. The movement of workers are restricted to the minimum required motions and the Production team has continuously streamlining the actions and motions of the workers which has led to achieve a high level of efficiency in the productivity of the workers.

Health hazard monitoring
The health consciousness of the workplace has been a prime concern to the Management who has not spared any efforts to make it world class and highly appreciated by the BIS. There is a continuous monitoring of activities of workers to enable the management to withhold the safety within the strictly set norms and regulations.

1. The physical health of shop floor personnel's, those who handle bottles should be in good condition, so as to avoid any contamination of liquid being packed. They need to be medically examined to ensure that they are not suffering from any of the contagious diseases, which can effect hygiene of the area and a certificate from a doctor to be obtained in this regard.
2. As the purified water industry has high standards of hygiene, hence protective wear should be used like hairnet, face masks and hand gloves. Furthermore, prohibition of shoes which are worn outside the factory has been effectively implemented without overrides. Also good quality clothes is worn by the workers.
3. The working environment is kept neat and clean. The use of isolated bottling area and similar measures are implemented in the factory premises so as to reduce/eliminate the chances of any contamination in production area.

Quality Assurance
Packaged Drinking Water in under mandatory BIS certification as per the PFA Rules, 1955 administered by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. IS 14543 Packaged Drinking Water
As per the standards the following defines the gamut for the term Packaged Drinking water:
Packaged drinking water means water derived from surface water or underground water or sea waterwhich is subjected to hereinunder specified treatments, namely, 􀂾decantation, filtration, combination of filtration, aerations, filtration with membrane filter depth filter, cartridge filter, activated carbon filtration, demineralization, remineralization, reverse osmosis and packed after disinfecting the water to a level that shall not lead to any harmful contamination in the drinking water by means of chemical agents or physical methods to reduce the number of microorganisms to a level beyond scientifically accepted level for food safety or its suitability. The standards setup by the BIS and McDowells are strictly followed at VAPL to maintain the sanctity of its products.

Factory Production Line

1. Preforms Bubbling Machines
   These machines allows expanding of the compacted delivery system (Plastic Bottles) which are procured as per the norms stipulated by McDowells and regulated by BIS. The present capacity is 3600 bottles per hour which can be expanded to 7200 by additional equipments.
2. Sand and Carbon Filter
   These have the superb ability to absorb the impurities. These products have quality base coarse carbon columns to remove the carbon contaminant from the water. This system works on the filtration process that consists of passing water effluent through filter medium that strain out colloidal particles such as fine sand, anthracite, earth particles or filter fabric. Our activated sand filters and carbon filters are used for removing free chlorine, phenol, taste and odour as well as reduction COD/BOD. These specially designed sand filters and carbon filters are made from mild still FRP closed vessel incorporating frontal piping fitted with valves. These are operated under pressure where the water is passed through the under bed media and granular activated carbon layer. Our sand and carbon filters have a back flushing arrangement that easily flushes away the deposited impurity at carbon granules.
3. Micron Filters
   Micron Cartridge Filters are essentials end filters, to get a super clarity & extra sparkle to water that is already filtered by a conventional sand filter. Very fine suspended impurities, colloidal matter, chlorine traces sand particles etc. which escape untrapped in sand filter, are easily separated in these filters. These micron cartridge filters are most useful, in various industries, for achieving high standards of quality of the finished products as a great help in research activities in laboratories, hospitals marine & microbiological research organizations.
4. Reverse Osmosis
   Reverse osmosis (RO) is a membrane technicalfiltration method that removes many types of large molecules and ions from solutions by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of a selective membrane. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be "selective," this membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as the solvent) to pass freely.
   In the normal osmosis process the solvent naturally moves from an area of low solute concentration, through a membrane, to an area of high solute concentration. The movement of a pure solvent to equalize solute concentrations on each side of a membrane generates osmotic pressure. Applying an external pressure to reverse the natural flow of pure solvent, thus, is reverse osmosis. The process is similar to other membrane technology applications. However, there are key differences between reverse osmosis and filtration. The predominant removal mechanism in membrane filtration is straining, or size exclusion, so the process can theoretically achieve perfect exclusion of particles regardless of operational parameters such as influent pressure and concentration. Reverse osmosis, however, involves a diffusive mechanism so that separation efficiency is dependent on solute concentration, pressure, and water flux rate.[1] Reverse osmosis is most commonly known for its use in drinking water purification from seawater, removing the salt and other substances from the water molecules.
   Application of this process at this stage of the purification ensures the extension of quality of the water supplied by VAPL. The picture below is the machinery which enables the process at VAPL.
5. Pre-Treated Storage Tanks
   This storage provides a safety net to ensure continous flow of purified water into the bottling sequence. The setup timing which may occur during peak production is gapped by the presence of such a storage device.
6. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI)
   This is a sterilization method that uses ultraviolet (UV) light at sufficiently short wavelength to break down microorganisms.[1] It is used in a variety of applications, such as food, air and water purification. UV has been a known mutagen at the cellular level for more than one-hundred years. The 1903 Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to Niels Finsen for his use of UV against tuberculosis.[2]UVGI utilises the short wavelength of UV that is harmful to microorganisms. It is effective in destroying the nucleic acids in these organisms so that their DNA is disrupted by the UV radiation. This removes their reproductive capabilities and kills them. The wavelength of UV that causes this effect is rare on Earth as its atmosphere blocks it.[3] Using a UVGI device in certain environments like circulating air or water systems creates a deadly effect on micro-organisms such as pathogens, viruses and molds that are in these environments. Coupled with a filtration system, UVGI can remove harmful micro-organisms from these environments. The application of UVGI to sterilization has been an accepted practice since the mid-20th century. It has been used primarily in medical sanitation and sterile work facilities. Increasingly it was employed to sterilize drinking and wastewater, as the holding facilities were enclosed and could be circulated to ensure a higher exposure to the UV. In recent years UVGI has found renewed application in air sanitization.
7. Ozone Generator
   Ninety percent of the worlds drinking water, including most bottled and municipal water, is treated with ozone to kill germs and bacteria. Ozone acts 3000 times faster than chlorine and is the strongest oxidant commercially available for air & water treatment. There is simply no better way to truly purify water and food than with ozone. 99% percent of all bacteria in drinking water can be killed with ozone water treatments.Ozonated water is completely safe to drink since none of the ozone remains in the water. Ozone is only 100% Oxygen!Not only will you make the best tasting water you've ever had, it will also be the purest. The United States Food and Drug Administration has also asked all bottled water company's to ozonate their water in order to prevent disease.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in conjunction with the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1991, confirmed that ozone was effective in ridding water of hazardous pathogens, including chlorine resistant Cryptosporidium." 8. Bottling Machine
   The bottling machine is the most critical equipment providing capacity of 3600 liters per hour. The speed settings can be reduced to percentages of its total capacity therby regulating the efficiency of the workers. Presently working at 50% capacity and the prospects expected to reach 250 to 280% by multiple shifts and increased utilisation.
